Nepal: MCP Masters Counselling Psychology

The Institute of Crisis Management wanted to make new potential students and academics aware of our new Masters Counselling Psychology course that will be launching mid-June 2017. Starting in Mid-June the course will offer a comprehensive overview of counselling psychology and equip students with the skills and techniques to be effective and compassionate Counselling Psychologists and able to work in a wide variety of settings.

This is the first time the ICMS in association with Tribhuvan University is offering such a course. There are a number of exciting collaboration and co-operation opportunities including with Patrice Molten, Professor of psychology at Northwestern State University, and as a result we feel that the launch of this course is a really exciting opportunity. We welcome all potential students, scholars to get into contact with the ICMS. We are able to arrange for a campus tour and discussion with a faculty member for potential students. For exemplary scholars and working psychologists we can also offer guest lectures and conferences to provide a platform for the discussion of issues relating to Counselling Psychology. This course will build on the ICMS’s outstanding reputation for its MA Crisis Management course and provide an inter-disciplinary approach, meaning those MCP students will also be able to learn elements of crisis management and intervention, which may be very beneficial in their work.

The Institute of Crisis Management Studies The Institute of Crisis Management Studies is a newly established centre for academia focusing on management of crises, and MA counselling. The ICMS offers the very best national and international scholars, practitioners and experts currently engaged in the diverse areas pertaining to counselling psychology. The ICMS also offers trainings, simulation exercises and field visits, not only as part of the curriculum but as practical exercises for a range of different governmental and non-governmental organizations and initiatives. The specialized nature of the ICMS extends to its purpose-built grounds, computer facilities, and online learning experiences to inspire students to forward themselves and the subject. Our dedication to producing crisis managers means a commitment to undertaking and facilitating the very newest research in the subject and providing a forum for dialogue into issues relating to counselling psychology. Master’s Degree Course Description:

The course is designed to make students competent in both prevention and intervention level. They will be exposed to a wide array of patient populations and communities for understanding and provide care, support and counselling both at a preventative and intervention level. In each semester students need to learn skills, involve in practice, exercise and apply their knowledge and skill. After completion of the program students will be able to conduct and provide direct psychosocial and mental health counselling services to clients across a wide range of medical, research, mental health and independent practice settings.

A limited number of students are admitted each year and placement is competitive. The Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology program’s training emphasizes both academic and applied experiences that incorporate development-contextual and multicultural frameworks to understand and promote psychosocial and mental health and well-being in diverse populations. A broad background in counselling and mental health theories and their application will be provided to the students to develop strong counselling skills, gain core professional knowledge and competencies, and master scientifically informed best practices.

It is expected that after the completion of the course the students will be ready to practice contemporary counselling Master in Counselling Psychology program is developed in such a way to provide knowledge, skills and experience in mental health and psychological counselling. Training and practice of counselling will be closely supervised. Training will be provided by experienced trainers and settings for practice will be completed by directly visiting communities as well as through different organisations to learn and refine their skills.

Students need to complete 65 credit hours of coursework, get trained, and engaged in fieldwork experience. Fieldwork/Internship is a must. One of the major missions is to prepare counselors with additional expertise in community based psychosocial services which is hoped to fulfill the wide gap between mental health, psychosocial problems and quality of services in Nepal.

The following units will be studied over four semesters: Foundations of Counselling, Life-Span Development, Mental Health and Psychopathology, Multicultural Psychology and Counselling, Critical Thinking: An Intellectually Disciplined Process, Counselling Communication Skills (Practicum), Assessment in Counselling: Theory and Practise, Behaviour Modification (Theory and Practise), Non-directive Counselling (Theory and Practise), Research Methods 1, Family Counselling (Theory and Practise), Counselling with Children and Adolescents (Theory and Practise), Solution Focused Counselling (Theory and Practise), Career Counselling (Theory and Practise), Research Methods 2, Expressive Theories (Practicum), Community Based Psychosocial Intervention (Practicum), Introduction to Crisis Management Study, Optional Trauma/Crisis Counselling (Theory and Practise), Disaster Management Theory and Practise, Optional-Mental Health Counselling (Theory and Practise), Thesis

The ICMS offers a series of conferences, trainings and simulations. The ICMS has also gone on a number of international trainings and seminars, allowing students to learn in a variety of settings. Previous students have been both Nepali and International and graduates have gone onto work in the security forces as well as a number of government and non-government roles.
